We had returned from Guatemala. We moved first to Tucson, home of my maternal grandparents, and then to a temporary house in Alexandria, Virginia.
I had a brief trial by fire as a gifted and talented student in the school's enlightened program. I enjoyed reading books with the kids from the next grade, but being split between the two worlds made finding friends complicated.
